Fencing Information

Do you make custom size fence panels?
We will make our panels in shorter lengths except for the F and K Series.

How high can I build my fence?
You should check with your local city hall, but you will probably find that 6 feet is the maximum height allowed.

Is it best to cement my posts in the ground? If so, how much cement should I use?
We have found it is best to cement the fence posts in the ground. It is important that you tamp the ground firmly as you are replacing the dirt and rocks in order to make the post as sound as possible. Normally we recommend a minimum or 1 but prefereably 1-1/2 55 lb bag of premixed cement per post hole.

How deep should I set my fence posts in the ground?
In most cases setting a post 2 feet deep in the ground is sufficient.

What is the difference between T&G Boards and S1S2E Boards?
T&G (Tongue and Groove) Boards fit into each other. S1S2E Boards, have flat edges and 'butt' up against one another.

Wood Preservation

How do I protect my wood?
Staining your wood with a solid, semi-transparent or translucent stain will prolong the life of your cedar structures.

When is it safe to stain?
The weather is usually the deciding factor with staining. With most stains the drier the wood the better, however there are some water born stains that can be applied when the wood is wet. It is best to check the product specifications before applying any stain.

How often should I stain?
There are 3 basic types of stain. Solid, semi-transparent and translucent. The life of each type depends on the weather and the exposure (southern, northern). Generally speaking a solid stain will last approximately 5 -7 years. A semi-transparent stain 3 - 5 years. Translucent stain 1 - 2 years.

How can I prevent my posts from rotting?
It is very difficult to prevent any natural product from rotting once it is set in the ground. Pressure Treated fence posts, are chemically treated to prolong their life, but even then, their lifespan is dependent upon how they are installed, and the type of ground/drainage that they are set into. There are a small number of Treatment products available, designed to supplement Pressure Treating, or to preserve un-treated posts. Unfortunately, they are either prohibitively expensive, or largely ineffective.

Can I stain my pressure treated posts right away?
It is recommended that Pressure Treated Posts are left to dry-out thoroughly before applying any Wood Treatment or Preservative. Treated Posts are soaked in tanks during the treatment process and often arrive wet to the core. If you stain these posts before the treatment has a chance to dry out, it can react with the Stain you're applying. We recommend around 2-3 months of sustained good weather before applying Stain to this product.

Cedar Species Information

What is the difference between red cedar and yellow cedar?
Yellow cedar is about 15% stronger than Red Cedar, lasts longer in the ground, holds nails better and is more bug resistant. It is also more difficult to stain because of its tight grain and oil content. Red cedar is a much more porous wood and accepts a greater variety of stains. Red cedar also has less of a tendency to warp than yellow cedar. Yellow Cedar grows closer to the tree line than Red Cedar and is therefore less abundant and due to logging restrictions, more Red Cedar Trees are flled than Yellow. In terms of cost, Yellow Cedar is slightly more expensive in smaller dimensions than Red Cedar, but larger Yellow Cedar timbers are considerably more expensive.

Installation Information

Do you install your products in the lower mainland?
Yes, we have our own dedicated and experienced Installation Crews - both for Residential and Commercial clients. For a price on installing our products, please contact us for a free, no obligation quotation, and one of our estimators will happily arrange an appointment to visit your site.

Do your crews stain fences or decks that you install?
No. With the unpredictable weather on the West Coast, it is too difficult to schedule a definite starting time for staining. We do however offer a Pre-Staining service, whereby the material is stained at a plant prior to installation - prices for which can be discussed with our estimators.

Are your estimates free?
Yes, however we do charge for I.C.B.C. quotes as we have found the majority of claimants take the payment and build the fence themselves.

Shed Information

What is the roof slope on your sheds?
The slope on our sheds is a 4/12 pitch.

How long does it take to build a shed?
The time it takes depends on the person swinging the hammer. An average time for a 10' x 8' shed for example would be two full days for a person with some building experience and a helper.

Are there other sizes available other than the ones listed?
The sheds listed do cover our full range of available stock sizes. However, we can make or suggest how to make alterations to the stock sizes to fit a specific need, or indeed pre-cut the necessary components for a custom size shed, within certain size restrictions.

Do you have a gambrel (barn) style roof?
Sorry, at this time we DO NOT have a gambrel style roof shed.

What is your shingle type and color?
We have both cedar and asphalt shingles. The asphalt shingle is available in a Cedar color only. If you want to match the shingles on your house we could delete our shingles from the shed package and you could purchase matching shingles oelsewhere.

What are the shed frames made of?
All Shed and Lean-To frames are made of 2 x 4 Kiln-Dried Spruce.

What is the floor made of?
The floor consists of 2x4 Kiln-Dried Spruce for both the joists and plates with 5/8" Plywood flooring.

Are the sheds prefab?
No, the Shed-kits are completely knocked down. It would be difficult to transport pre-fabricated Sheds without compromising the structure in transit, there is the possibility that it could get damaged en route to the location, and pre-fabricated structures are difficult to tie-down securely without causing some superficial marking or damage to the structure itself.

Are the sheds pre-stained?
No they come with natural unstained Red Cedar Bevel siding.

What type of siding is used on your sheds?
Red Cedar Bevel siding.

What type of foundation do you recommend?
We recommend a foundation of Pressure Treated 4 x 4's running front to rear, perpendicular to the floor joists. Cement pads or pier blocks may be used depending on how level or how soft the ground is. Typically on a 8' or 10' wide three rows on 4 x 4's (2 on the outside and 1 down the middle) provided adequate support If cement pads are to be used we like to see a maximum spacing of about 4 feet between pads.

Is the foundation included?
No. Some of our customers have poured cement pads or have the floor deleted from their kits so we leave the Foundation kit as an optional add-on.

Is the hardware included in your shed and gazebo kits?
All of the hardware including the nails and door hinges, tarpaper underlay and importantly plans are included with our shed and gazebo kits.

Billing Information

What types of payment do you accept?
Cash, Cheque, Debit Card, Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

I'm from Washington State. What form of payment do you take?
Cash of course, debit card, Visa, MasterCard and American Express. If you are from the U.S., it is to your advantage to pay with a Visa or MasterCard as you will get the bank rate of exchange rather than the in-store exchange which is slightly less.
